Understanding Rondo March from The Nutcracker with Anne McKennon

A rondo is a musical structure where a repeated refrain section (A) alternates with contrasting episodes: A B A C A B A. In Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker March, each of those sections is broken into statement and answer phrases that repeat in the rondo pattern. Instructor Anne McKennon illustrates the rondo structure of the March, itemizing the themes of each section. Hear a clip of the final A section performed by the Civic Orchestra of Jacksonville.
